South Carolina Institute for Childhood Obesity and Related Disorders
Background
An estimated 17% of children in South Carolina, ages 2-19 years, are obese. Increasing numbers of these children are being treated for obesity-related conditions such as Type II diabetes and hypertension. To address this alarming trend, the South Carolina Children's Hospital Collaborative has created the South Carolina Institute for Childhood Obesity and Related Disorders. [SCICORD] SCICORD is a statewide program funded by The Duke Endowment to accomplish the following objectives:
- Expand existing obesity prevention and treatment programs being offered by each of the four South Carolina children's hospitals.
- Develop and implement programs in rural communities through the use of telemedicine.
- Develop partnerships with local schools to implement effective nutritional and physical education programs.
- Develop public service announcements for radio and television, focusing on nutrition and healthy lifestyles for children.
- Develop and capture measurable outcomes data to determine effectiveness of program services.
